808nm diode laser system is widely practiced and ideal hair removal system in clinical use. Selective photothermolysis (SPTL), the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain optimal effect on a targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. Lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter, melanin, in the area that causes hair growth, the follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin. The energy absorption of hair follicle melanin is strongest at 808nm wavelength, which can damage the hair follicles effectively, meanwhile no adverse reaction to skin surface.
IPL which is short for Intense Pulsed Light uses filtered broadband light technology to selectively heat specific targets (chromophores) in the skin. Depending on the wavelength selected, the target chromophores can be melanin or haemoglobin. In this way, pigmentation, spider veins and hair follicles can be preferentially destroyed without harming the surrounding normal skin.
